Representative Ken Rahjes spoke in support of HB2605. (Attachment 2) He said Undersheriff Brandon Gaede served Phillips County with integrity, humility, and a deep sense of duty. He confronted a dangerous situation that escalated without warning and tragically lost his life in the line of duty. Renaming this stretch of U.S. Highway 36 is more than a symbolic gesture. It is a public acknowledgment that Deputy Gaede's sacrifice matter - that his service will not be forgotten, and that the people of Kansas honor those who give their lives in defense of their communities.
Senator Elaine Bowers gave proponent testimony for HB2605. (Attachment 3) She stated that Undersheriff Brandon Gaede was kind of public servant who showed up not for recognition or reward - but because he believed in protecting the people of his community. This designation offers a lasting tribute to his widow, Karlye, his three precious children, and his entire family. It weaves his legacy into the landscape of the community he loved and protected, and it stands as a visible reminder that Kansas remembers its heroes.
Ed Klumpp gave testimony on behalf of Sheriff Kyle Pinkerton, who provided provided testimony but was unable to attend the hearing.(Attachment 4) Sheriff Pinkerton stated in his testimony that Brandon was the kind of deputy every Sheriff hopes to have in their office. He was the person others trusted, the person new deputies looked up to, and the person you could count on to do the right thing even when no one was watching. The community came to know and respect Brandon for his dedication and for the compassion he showed to those he served.
