Chairperson Francis opened the hearing on SB132.
Chris Waggoner, Office of Revisor of Statutes, provided an overview of the bill and addressed questions from the committee. (Attachment 7)
Senator Jeffrey Pittman, Kansas Legislature, District 5 offered his strong support of the bill. Senator Pittman described the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers and how it continues to inspire generations by serving as a testament to the bravery, patriotism, and perseverance of African Americans in the face of adversity. (Attachment 8)
George Pettigrew, Executive Vice President, Alexander/Madison Chapter of Buffalo Soldiers offered his full support for the creation of a Kansas license plate that would bestow recognition on the Buffalo Soldiers who fought discrimination while simultaneously fighting for a better life for our country - from the Indian Wars to the Korean War when full integration finally put the regiment to rest. (Attachment 9)
Edna Wagner, Executive Director, Richard Allen Cultural Center stated her strong support of the bill to establish the Buffalo Soldiers license plate. Ms. Wagner described her belief that the plate will serve to publicize the rich history of the Buffalo Soldiers and remind citizens of the considerable contributions made by African Americans throughout their military service to our country. (Attachment 10)
There being no further conferees, Chairman Francis closed the hearing on SB132.
The next meeting is scheduled for March 09, 2023.
